To save you some reading, he says you should take Uber instead. I think it’s a slim margin of people for whom this makes sense. And for all of those people, public transit makes more sense. For me, Uber would cost at least $2,000 a month for just my commute.

That’s terrible advice. Even if I worked locally; to take an uber a mile in my town costs $7.50 each way. $14 if I want to go 5 miles. Even if I was lazy and did $15 a day that’s $312.50 a month (assuming 5days/50weeks) , but if I work 5 miles away that’s $625.

Residents of rural areas need not apply.
What is this public transportation you speak of? Uber? In an average week, I see about zero taxis. I mean, of any kind. No, I’m not exaggerating.

It’s a $60 round trip to my job everyday via lyft; on the flip side I spend $30-40 on gas once every 10(ish) days.
I dont have a car payment anymore, only insurance. Even factoring that in, lyft doesnt make sense

I was once in a precarious situation where I had to explore Alternative Facts, err, transportation options. Some quick math showed that Ubering was not a realistic option.

As a resident of a Western suburban city, I'm trying to remember what year it was I last saw a taxi.

Im having a hard time understanding “don’t do something you can do yourself, pay someone to do it...it will be cheaper”.

Ha, well at least I assume you have Uber or something. Here it’s neither. Last time I rode in a taxi here was.... hmm. 2006? A friend got married and hired a “taxi” which turned out to be a kid I went to high school with, who drove people around with his minivan at night for extra cash.

I live in BFE nowhere, smack-dab in a desert. We don’t even have a Target, much less public transportation . Owning a car or a bike is pretty much required.

Cars cost a fortune in maintenance and insurance and just the amortization, which means as they go down in value, you’re losing money,” O’Leary explains. “Let’s say I pay $25,000 for it. Two years later, it might be worth only 12 [thousand dollars].
Why don’t people who make this calculation ever add the money you make using your car? If you use your car to get to work and don’t have a very good reliable alternative to it, then your income should be added to this equation.

If you live in New York that might make sense, but for most people it’s nonsense.

We do have Uber here (maybe lyft, too?). I have ridden in a Taxi exactly once in my life, in San Antonio.

That’s what I mean, in the places where Uber could actually compete with buying a car (i.e. cities), public transit is also probably good.

Especially since his math shows depreciation of $13k over 5 years, which works out to 2 $5 Uber rides per day for 5 days a week.

They also just figure that $13k in depreciation to be lost to the ether, like the car should just be eternally valuable no matter how much wear and tear you put on it.
